"'You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Matthew 5:14
When we walk into a dark room, the first thing we do is reach for the light switch. One tiny light makes all the difference between blindly groping our way around in the dark and easily maneuvering through a lighted room.
In our lives, we were made to be that light. We were destined to shine. Every single human being was endowed with the power to be a light, but we never get around to flipping the switch so we stay in darkness, mourning our bad luck and our circumstances when, in reality, all we have to do is turn on the light!
A light bulb on its own has no power, but if you plug it in to the right socket and you flip the switch, voila! There is light! In life, we are like that light bulb. When we're plugged in, God's power flows through us and we become the light.
How do we do that? We flip the switch.
The power to defeat our problems comes from God. On our own, we are powerless to change anything. But when we tap into the power that comes from God, a mighty force is unleashed that cannot be defeated. When we allow God's power to flow through us, the darkest night becomes a bright and glorious day. Nothing can defeat us. Nothing. We just flipped the switch!
Can you imagine that? It's like the most powerful laser in the universe that annihilates everything negative in its path – and we turn it on.
Every negative circumstance in our lives is an opportunity to use The Light of God in us to change it. The purpose of those circumstances was never meant to stop us, they were meant to challenge us. We were always meant to turn on The Light.
Yeah, but how do I do that, you ask?
The moment you stop running from your problems and turn them over to God, you've flipped the switch. The moment you stop trying to be something you're not and ask God to make what you were meant to be, you've flipped the switch. The moment your life ceases to be all about you and becomes all about what God can do through you, you've flipped the switch. And that switch has the power to light up the entire world.
