It's my party and I'll cry if I want to. . .”  Lesley Gore

Welcome to the party of the year and the guest of honor is you! I see you’re wearing your best outfit for the occasion. You look great! Let’s go meet the other guests, shall we?

What? You don’t recognize these people? Sure you do. Look closer.

See over there? There's Bitterness and Anger. Remember them? And on the left side of the room are Fear and Resentment. See, they’re the ones glaring at you. Of course Rebellion and Denial have already shown up and started a fight, and Rejection is over there hiding behind the potted plant. I see Depression has started to cry, so it looks like you’re just in time.

You poor thing. You must be exhausted. Why wouldn’t you be? Look at everything you’ve been through! Come sit down. Tell us about it. After all, that’s what we’re here for. Life is so unfair, don’t you think? You should feel overwhelmed. You have every right to feel angry! Look at what they’ve done to you! Who could blame you for giving up? It’s their fault. You never even had a chance, poor baby.

Did I introduce myself? How silly of me! I, of course, am Self-Pity and I threw this party just for you – after all, no one deserves a pity party more than you! I love a good party. This one is especially great because I don’t have to clean up the mess.

You do.

What? No one told you that? How sad! Yep, the fact of the matter is that after these little get-together’s you are responsible for the mess. We get to leave and you get the honor of dealing with the aftermath.
Won’t that be fun? Oh, look, here comes Hopelessness! I thought she’d never get here. Excuse me while I go show her in...

Self-pity is, by far, the most dangerous emotion in life. The most attractive of emotions, it will secretly and silently undermine everything you try to accomplish. When you give in to self pity you become powerless because wherever self pity goes, a whole gang of other emotions are sure to follow. Little by little they erode away your emotions, silently taking over everything, while convincing you that it’s okay to give up.

The longer the pity party, the more mess there will be and the harder it is to clean up. When self pity comes knocking, do yourself a favor and don’t answer the door. Millions of people live their lives stuck in a perpetual pity party, oblivious to the consequences - defeated before they began.
